Union Minister Kiren Rijiju, speaking in the Rajya Sabha on the Waqf Amendment Bill 2025, shed light on the vast scale and potential income of Waqf properties in India.
"As of today, there are 8.72 lakh Waqf properties… In 2006, if the Sachar committee had estimated the earnings from 4.9 lakh Waqf properties at Rs 12,000 crore, then you can imagine the income these properties must be generating now," said Rijiju, emphasizing the massive financial potential of these assets.
Highlighting the significance of the Waqf Amendment Bill 2025, Rijiju urged opposition parties to extend their support. "I appeal to the Congress party and its allies to support the Waqf Amendment Bill 2025," he stated, reinforcing the government's stance on regulating and ensuring better management of Waqf properties.
The statement comes amid a heated debate on the bill, which aims to bring more transparency and accountability in the administration of Waqf assets across India. With over 8.72 lakh properties under Waqf control, concerns over their management, revenue generation, and utilization have been a focal point of political and legal discussions.
