After a Week Of Dry Weather, Light Rain Returns To Mumbai; Humid Conditions And Local Traffic Delays Likely

Mumbai witnessed a return of monsoon rains on Thursday morning, breaking a week-long dry stretch across the city. Light to moderate showers were reported in various parts of the city and suburbs, with the rain continuing through the night in select areas.

Despite the fresh spell, the monsoon remains relatively subdued, and no major disruptions have been reported. Local trains were largely running on time across the Western, Central, and Harbour lines, though minor delays occurred during peak hours. Road commuters, however, may face slow-moving traffic in low-lying and congested zones as water accumulation begins to affect regular flow.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a Nowcast alert at 7:00 a.m. indicating light rain in isolated parts of Mumbai and neighbouring Thane over the next few hours. Areas along the Konkan coast, including Mumbai, continue to see intermittent rainfall, even though overall monsoon strength has diminished in recent weeks.

In South Mumbai, neighbourhoods such as Colaba, Marine Drive, and Fort saw damp roads and cloudy skies, with light showers expected to continue. Central Mumbai localities like Sion, Matunga, and Dadar remained overcast, while suburbs like Bandra, Andheri, and Santacruz reported patchy rainfall. The eastern corridor, including Chembur, Ghatkopar, and Mulund, also recorded brief showers.

Thane, Navi Mumbai, and Palghar experienced similar conditions, with areas like Vashi, Nerul, and Ghansoli receiving light rain. Coastal zones of Palghar may see increased rainfall by evening.

The city’s humidity levels are forecast to hover between 75% and 85% through the day, contributing to sticky and uncomfortable weather, especially in the afternoon hours when rainfall is less likely. The sky is expected to stay largely cloudy, with occasional clear intervals. Rainfall, if any, is most likely during morning and late evening.
