The murder of Beed sarpanch Santosh Deshmukh has sparked a political storm in Maharashtra, with calls intensifying for state minister Dhananjay Munde to step down. However, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), to which Munde belongs, has adopted a cautious 'wait-and-see' approach, pending the conclusion of the investigation.
Election Fund Dispute Alleged as Motive
NCP leader Jitendra Awhad alleged that Deshmukh?s murder stemmed from a dispute over a ?2 crore election fund. He emphasized the need for a transparent investigation, criticizing the ruling BJP government for its alleged lack of focus on the case.
Opposition Demands Accountability
BJP MLA Suresh Dhas accused Valmik Karad, a prime suspect in the murder case, of manipulating administrative officer transfers in Beed, allegedly with Munde?s backing. According to Dhas, Munde granted Karad power of attorney for such decisions. He demanded that Munde remain in the cabinet but without a portfolio until a chargesheet is filed.
Congress MP Praniti Shinde echoed this sentiment, pointing to instances during the MVA government when ministers resigned over allegations to maintain moral accountability. NCP MP Supriya Sule added, ?Former Chief Minister Ashok Chavan resigned amid serious allegations, setting a precedent for ethical governance. The current cabinet should act responsibly.?
Investigation Intensifies
The investigation into Deshmukh?s murder is gaining traction, with the CID and SIT probing the case. Associates of Valmik Karad, who is also linked to a major extortion racket, are under scrutiny.
State NCP president Sunil Tatkare reiterated the party's demand for swift action against those involved. ?The SIT is investigating, and we will wait for the findings before deciding on Munde?s political future,? he said.
Surveillance Allegations Against BJP
Jitendra Awhad accused the BJP-led Maharashtra government of spying on the Opposition after a policeman recorded his press conference. Awhad said, ?Instead of monitoring me, they should focus on Valmik Karad,? and briefly detained the officer in protest.
What Lies Ahead?
With political leaders divided over Munde?s resignation and the NCP biding its time, the focus remains on the SIT investigation. The findings are likely to determine the political trajectory of this case, which has cast a shadow over the state government and raised questions about accountability and governance.
