The much-anticipated Bihar Assembly Elections 2025 kicked off on Thursday, November 6, with the first phase of polling taking place across 121 constituencies in 18 districts. Voter enthusiasm was visible across polling booths as the state began its democratic exercise to elect representatives for the 243-member Assembly.
According to the Election Commission of India, the first phase includes a significant number of fresh voters — around 10.72 lakh new electors, including 7.78 lakh young voters aged 18 to 19. The total population covered in this phase stands at approximately 6.6 crore.
This phase is crucial for both the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the Opposition’s Mahagathbandhan, as it features contests involving some of Bihar’s most prominent political figures. Among them are RJD leader Tejashwi Prasad Yadav, Deputy Chief Ministers Samrat Choudhary and Vijay Kumar Sinha, and senior JD(U) leaders Shravan Kumar and Vijay Kumar Choudhary.
Adding to the intrigue, Tej Pratap Yadav, the estranged elder son of RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav, is also contesting in this phase, setting up a politically charged family rivalry.
The election has also drawn attention with several celebrity candidates joining the fray. Folk singer Maithili Thakur and Bhojpuri star Khesari Lal Yadav are testing their popularity beyond the stage and screen. Meanwhile, JD(U) state president Umesh Kushwaha is also among the key contenders.
One of the most discussed battles is in Mokama, where Anant Singh, currently facing trial in a murder case linked to Jan Suraaj Party’s Dular Chand Yadav, is contesting on a JD(U) ticket.
This phase also marks a notable participation of women, with 122 female candidates contesting across constituencies, signaling a gradual but visible shift toward gender inclusivity in Bihar’s political landscape.
