In a significant development, Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna has submitted a confidential report to President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding allegations of unexplained cash recovery linked to Justice Yashwant Varma, currently serving at the Allahabad High Court.

The report stems from an inquiry conducted by a three-member panel constituted under the Supreme Court’s in-house procedure to investigate the matter. The panel included Punjab and Haryana High Court Chief Justice Sheel Nagu, Himachal Pradesh High Court Chief Justice G. S. Sandhawalia, and Karnataka High Court’s Justice Anu Sivaraman.

In a statement issued by the Supreme Court, it was confirmed:

"Chief Justice of India, in terms of the in-house procedure, has written to the President of India and the Prime Minister of India enclosing therewith copy of the three-member committee report dated May 3 along with the letter/response dated May 6 received from Justice Yashwant Varma."

According to sources, before forwarding the findings to the President and the Prime Minister, the CJI had shared the panel's report with Justice Varma and sought his response, adhering to the principle of natural justice.

The panel’s investigation was extensive, analyzing material evidence and recording statements from over 50 individuals. This included testimonies from Delhi Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora and the chief of Delhi Fire Services—both among the first responders to a fire incident that occurred at Justice Varma’s official residence in Lutyens’ Delhi at around 11:35 p.m. on March 14.
