In a contentious move, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has stirred controversy by pushing forward a bill mandating reservation for Kannadigas in the private sector. The decision, which has since been retracted following public outcry, aimed to prioritize local employment opportunities amid rising concerns over job access for native citizens.

The bill, initially passed in a cabinet meeting, proposed 100% mandatory hiring of Kannadigas for 'C and D' grade positions across all private industries in the state. Additionally, it outlined a 50% reservation in managerial roles and a substantial 75% quota in non-managerial categories. Essential to qualifying for these roles would be proficiency in Kannada, Karnataka's official language.

However, the announcement triggered swift and vehement opposition from various quarters. Citizens, business leaders, and public figures voiced their dissent on social media platforms, condemning the bill as discriminatory and regressive. Prominent voices like Mohandas Pai, former CEO of Infosys, labeled the legislation as "fascist" and argued it undermined constitutional principles.

"This bill should be junked. It is discriminatory, regressive, and against the constitution," tweeted Pai, reflecting widespread sentiments among critics. Biocon's Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw echoed concerns, emphasizing the importance of attracting skilled talent to maintain Bangalore's status as a global tech hub.

The backlash underscores the complex dynamics in Bangalore, Karnataka's capital and India's IT nerve center, where rapid industrial growth has fueled significant migration from other states. The city's transformation into a technological powerhouse has been pivotal in attracting talent and investment, contributing substantially to Karnataka's economic landscape.
