In a significant move, Deven Bharti, a 1994-batch Indian Police Services (IPS) officer, has been appointed as the new Commissioner of Mumbai Police by the Maharashtra government. Bharti, who has previously served as the Special Commissioner of Police in Mumbai, takes over the position following the retirement of Vivek Phansalkar, a 1989-batch IPS officer, on April 30.
Bharti, known for his extensive experience in Mumbai's law enforcement, was appointed as the city's first Special Police Commissioner in January 2023. He also served as one of the longest-serving Joint Commissioners of Police (Law & Order) in the capital city of Maharashtra. His tenure includes leading critical law enforcement initiatives, including heading the Maharashtra State Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS). Bharti’s significant involvement in the investigation of the 26/11 terror attacks further underscores his vast experience in tackling high-profile security challenges.
The appointment of Bharti comes as the city is bracing for a shift in leadership within the police force. While names like current National Investigation Agency (NIA) Chief Sadanand Date and his batchmate Sanjay Kumar Verma were also considered for the role, sources indicate that it was unlikely the centre would release Date from his NIA duties.
