Billionaire Elon Musk has made a significant donation to a super political action committee (PAC) supporting Donald Trump's bid for the White House. This move marks a major foray by the world's richest person into the U.S. political arena. According to sources familiar with the matter, Musk has contributed to America PAC, a relatively low-profile group working to bolster Trump's campaign efforts. While the exact amount of Musk's contribution is not clear, it has been described as substantial. The PAC is required to disclose its list of donors on July 15.
This donation underscores the growing influence of Musk, who tops the Bloomberg Billionaires Index with a net worth of $263.6 billion. Despite previously identifying as a political independent and expressing a preference to stay out of politics, Musk has increasingly used his X social-media platform to share right-leaning views and criticize Democrats.
Musk's financial support comes at a crucial time for Trump, who has surpassed President Joe Biden in fundraising efforts. With the help of wealthy Wall Street and corporate donors, Trump has gained a financial edge, while Biden's fundraising has slowed following a problematic debate that caused many prominent Democratic donors to hold back their contributions.
Although Musk has not publicly endorsed a candidate for the 2024 presidential race and had previously indicated he did not plan to fund either Trump or Biden's campaigns, his recent contribution signals a potential shift. This move could position Musk as a significant financial player for the Republicans.

Requests for comment from Musk went unanswered, and the Trump campaign declined to comment. Chris Gober, the treasurer of America PAC, also did not comment on the matter.
America PAC operates primarily behind the scenes to strengthen Trump's campaign through grassroots efforts. These activities are particularly focused on key battleground states that will play a pivotal role in the upcoming election. While Federal Election Commission (FEC) disclosures do not specify the locations of these efforts, the PAC's work includes canvassing and get-out-the-vote initiatives.
Musk's involvement could pose a considerable challenge to Biden and the Democrats, who are already grappling with internal party disputes over the president's political future. The Democrats have heavily invested in field offices and staff in swing states, a strategy Biden frequently highlights in his speeches. However, a super PAC like America PAC, which is dedicated to supporting Trump, provides Republicans with a significant cash advantage, allowing them to allocate official campaign funds elsewhere.
America PAC is currently the largest spender on direct voter contacts among groups backing Trump, having spent $15.8 million so far, with $13.1 million dedicated to field operations. The PAC also invests in digital media, texting, and phone calls to reach voters. A recent FEC ruling allows super PACs to coordinate with campaigns on voter outreach, further enhancing their impact.
America PAC has engaged In Field Strategies, a national grassroots firm that has also worked with the Republican National Committee. Representatives for In Field did not respond to requests for comment.
