On the death anniversary of Jayaprakash Narayan, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Gopal Rai drew attention to growing threats to India’s democracy. He said,
"Fifty years ago, Jayaprakash Narayan called for a revolution against the dictatorship of power in India. Under his leadership, a student-youth movement swept across the country, transforming that dictatorial government and establishing democracy."
Warning about contemporary challenges, Rai added, "Fifty years later, a new kind of dictatorship is being imposed on the country. The government seeks to exert control over every democratic institution through pressure and influence and now, at its peak, we have intimidated and threatened the Supreme Court into silence. The way a shoe was thrown at the Chief Justice is the culmination of this."
He also criticized the treatment of opposition parties and democratic institutions, stating, "Opposition parties have been picked up by the ED and CBI and thrown into jail. The Election Commission has been taken over by pressure. Now, efforts are being made to create a dictator to silence the judiciary."
Rai concluded by urging reflection on Narayan’s legacy, saying, "In such a situation, today is the death anniversary of Jayaprakash Narayan. Reflecting on his legacy, it is crucial to consider the way forward for India to emerge from its current situation, drawing lessons from Jayaprakash Narayan..."
