In a landmark moment for Indian space exploration, Indian Air Force Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla has become the first Indian astronaut in over four decades to journey into space. Shukla is part of the Axiom-4 (Ax-4) mission, a two-week private spaceflight launched on SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

The Ax-4 mission is led by veteran astronaut Peggy Whitson and includes Shukla as the pilot, with Sławosz Uznański (Poland) and Tibor Kapu (Hungary) as mission specialists. The spacecraft, a new SpaceX Dragon, is on its maiden flight and will dock with the International Space Station (ISS) on June 26 at 4:30 PM IST.

A symbolic toy swan, named Joy, is on board as the mission's zero-gravity indicator — representing wisdom and purity in Indian culture.

Shukla’s selection marks a significant milestone for India. Born in Lucknow, he was commissioned into the IAF in 2006, served as a combat leader and test pilot with over 2,000 flying hours, and rose to the rank of Group Captain in 2024. Trained at Russia’s Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Centre, Shukla was previously revealed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi as one of the astronauts in training under ISRO’s Gaganyaan Human Spaceflight Program.

Onboard the ISS, Shukla is expected to engage in microgravity research, spaceflight operations, and outreach with Indian students and space experts. His presence is set to boost India’s ambitions in human spaceflight, including the Gaganyaan mission and plans for a Bharatiya Antariksh Station (Indian Space Station).

The Department of Space has termed this mission strategically crucial, representing India’s growing capabilities and global collaboration in space exploration.

Former ISRO Chairman S. Somanath highlighted that insights from Shukla’s mission would be instrumental for future crewed space missions by India.
