In a heartbreaking incident, a 21-year-old Indian international student was killed after being struck by a stray bullet during a gang-style shootout in the Ontario town of Hamilton, Canada. The young woman, who was pursuing her studies at Mohawk College, was standing at a bus stop on her way to work when the fatal shooting occurred.

According to a statement issued by the Hamilton Police on Friday, “Investigators believe the female was an innocent bystander struck by a stray bullet during a shooting in the area.”

The tragic event unfolded around 7:30 pm on Thursday, when police responded to reports of gunfire and a possible homicide. The student sustained a gunshot wound to the chest and was immediately transported to a nearby hospital. Despite medical efforts, she succumbed to her injuries.

Investigators, after reviewing surveillance footage, revealed that the passenger of a black Mercedes SUV opened fire on the occupants of a white sedan. The white sedan fled the scene shortly after. In the crossfire, multiple shots struck a nearby residence, where a family was watching television. “Fortunately, no one was injured in the home,” the police release added.

Authorities are continuing to probe the shooting and have appealed for witnesses and anyone with information to come forward.

The Indian Consulate in Toronto expressed grief over the loss. In a statement, the mission said it was “deeply saddened by the tragic death” of the young student and assured that they are in touch with local authorities and the victim’s family to offer support.
