The Trinamool Congress on Saturday launched a sharp attack against the Election Commission’s special intensive revision of electoral rolls in Bihar and other states, branding it a “sinister move” aimed at helping the BJP secure its electoral future.
Addressing reporters, senior TMC leader Derek O’Brien claimed the exercise was nothing more than a backdoor attempt to implement the National Register of Citizens (NRC). “Why is this exercise being suddenly done right now?” he asked, questioning the motive.
O’Brien alleged the BJP had been rattled by its own internal survey showing it may secure only 46–49 seats in the West Bengal Assembly polls next year. “In their desperation to attempt to change things you do such things,” he said.
He warned that INDIA bloc allies will challenge this move both inside and outside Parliament. “We are all on the same page on this. We will not wait for Parliament to start. This cannot wait,” he declared.
Meanwhile, the CPI(M) also voiced alarm, writing to the Chief Election Commissioner to drop the plan, arguing it shifts the burden of inclusion or deletion in voter lists to ordinary citizens and threatens fair participation.
The Election Commission has argued that the drive is a standard effort to weed out ineligible voters and update records. After Bihar, similar revisions are planned in five states — including West Bengal — ahead of their legislative elections next year.
