The death toll from the tragic stampede at Tamil Nadu Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) leader Vijay’s campaign rally in Karur has climbed to 41, following the demise of Suguna, 65, a resident of Karur district, who succumbed to her injuries after being on ventilator support in the ICU.

Among the deceased are 18 women, 13 men, five young girls, and five young boys. The majority of victims, 34, were from Karur district, while two each hailed from Erode, Tiruppur, and Dindigul districts, and one from Salem.

The stampede occurred during a massive crowd gathering on Saturday evening, which reportedly turned chaotic, triggering panic. Several attendees fainted and were rushed to nearby hospitals as overcrowding led to the tragic incident.

Reacting to the tragedy, TVK chief and actor Vijay announced financial aid of Rs 20 lakh for the bereaved families and Rs 2 lakh for the injured. In an emotional post on X, he wrote that he was at a "loss for words" to express his grief, adding that the faces of the deceased kept flashing through his mind.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also extended support, announcing compensation of Rs 2 lakh each from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund (PMNRF) for the families of the 39 victims and Rs 50,000 for each injured person. The PMO shared on X: "PM Narendra Modi has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh from PMNRF to be given to the next of kin of each deceased in the unfortunate incident at a political rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu. The injured would be given Rs 50,000."
