Maharashtra is set for a major political exercise as elections for Zilla Parishads and Panchayat Samitis will be held across the state on February 7, with vote counting scheduled for February 9. The State Election Commission has confirmed the revised dates, marking one of the largest rural elections in the state after recent urban body polls.

The elections were originally planned earlier in February but had to be postponed following the state-wide mourning announced after the tragic death of senior leader Ajit Pawar in a plane crash near Baramati on January 28. The rescheduling has now cleared the way for polling to take place across several districts.

These rural local body elections are being closely watched as they come soon after municipal corporation and municipal council polls, where the ruling Mahayuti alliance of the BJP, Shiv Sena, and NCP delivered a strong performance. Political observers believe the Zilla Parishad and Panchayat Samiti results will indicate whether the ruling coalition’s momentum extends beyond cities into rural Maharashtra.

This year’s elections will cover a slightly higher number of seats compared to the last cycle. Due to population changes and administrative revisions, the total number of Zilla Parishad seats has increased to 731, while Panchayat Samiti seats have risen to 1,462. The elections will be conducted in 12 districts, including Pune, Kolhapur, Solapur, Latur, Satara, Sangli, and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, among others.

Lakhs of voters across villages and talukas will participate in the democratic process. According to the Election Commission, more than 2.09 crore voters are eligible to cast their ballots. Each voter will vote separately for the Zilla Parishad and the Panchayat Samiti, making it a dual-vote election.

To ensure smooth polling, the administration has made large-scale arrangements. Over 1.28 lakh election staff have been deployed, and voting will take place at more than 25,000 polling stations spread across the state. Security and logistical measures have been strengthened to prevent disruptions.

With local governance, rural development, and political influence at stake, the February 7 polls are expected to be fiercely contested. The results on February 9 are likely to shape Maharashtra’s rural political landscape ahead of future state and national elections.
