In a major tech-driven leap toward efficient traffic enforcement, Mira Bhayandar Police have launched a new initiative leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) to automatically detect and penalize traffic violations. The initiative, according to Police Commissioner Madhukar Pandey, aims to reduce human dependency and enhance enforcement accuracy.
"In Mira Bhayandar city, we have launched a new initiative using Artificial Intelligence through the cameras installed here to automatically generate challans (traffic violation fines)," Commissioner Pandey said, highlighting the advanced system's rollout.
He explained that earlier, manual monitoring of traffic through surveillance cameras demanded significant manpower, leading to inconsistent enforcement across various areas. "Monitoring the cameras to check for traffic violations required a lot of manpower, and due to this, watchers couldn’t be deployed consistently at many places," he added.
To address these challenges, the police department, in collaboration with its technology partners, has developed an AI-powered system capable of detecting violations such as signal jumping, wrong-side driving, and helmetless riding without the need for constant human oversight.
"Now, in collaboration with our technology partners, we have developed a system where Artificial Intelligence will detect traffic violations, and challans will be generated automatically," Pandey noted.
This initiative is part of a broader push toward smart policing in urban centers, enhancing road safety, ensuring better compliance with traffic rules, and optimizing police resources for more critical tasks.
