Mumbai Drenched: Red Alert Issued As Heavy Rains Lash City, Waterlogging Hits Several Areas

The city woke up to torrential rain and a grey skyline on Saturday, with relentless downpours pounding several suburbs since early morning. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for Mumbai, warning of “intense spells at isolated locations” through the day.

Neighbouring districts too are on high alert. Raigad has been placed under a red warning for August 16, anticipating extremely heavy showers, while Palghar is bracing for a prolonged spell of rain from Sunday until August 19.

The heavy overnight rain led to widespread waterlogging across Mumbai’s vulnerable pockets. Reports of flooding came in from Sion-King Circle, Bandra, Vile Parle, Andheri, Vashi, and Vasai-Virar. At Sion railway station, tracks were seen submerged, while vehicles in Bandra and Andheri struggled to navigate through knee-deep water. Pedestrians waded cautiously through flooded lanes in Navi Mumbai’s Vashi.

Despite the deluge, the city avoided a complete breakdown of civic systems—unlike in previous years when similar showers crippled Mumbai’s infrastructure. Suburban train services, considered the lifeline of the metropolis, ran with only minor delays, and no major gridlock was reported on arterial roads. Civic authorities credited “improved drainage work and pre-monsoon readiness” for the relatively smoother functioning.

The weather system has kept Mumbai on edge for days. Just on Independence Day, August 15, the city recorded heavy rain across multiple zones. According to IMD data, Colaba observatory has logged 1,119.2 mm of rainfall so far this monsoon, while Santacruz has registered 1,435.7 mm—both figures suggesting that Mumbai is on track to exceed its seasonal averages.

Meanwhile, Mumbai Police issued a strong advisory urging residents to stay alert. In a statement on its official X handle, police said, “Mumbai is experiencing heavy rainfall with an Orange Alert in effect. Waterlogging and reduced visibility have been reported in several areas. Mumbaikars are advised to avoid non-essential travel and exercise caution while venturing out.”

Police officials also confirmed that personnel have been deployed on high alert to manage emergencies, with helplines 100, 112, and 103 activated for rapid response.
