Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Thursday submitted his nomination papers for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, triggering strong political reactions across the state. His move to the Upper House is being viewed as a clear signal that Bihar may soon witness a major leadership change.
Nitish Kumar had recently spoken about his long-standing desire to become a member of the Rajya Sabha, completing his journey through all major legislative Houses. By formally entering the race, he has intensified speculation that he may step down as Chief Minister once the election process is completed. Political observers believe this development could open the door for the Bharatiya Janata Party to appoint its own Chief Minister in Bihar.
Despite being a dominant force in national politics and leading governments in several Hindi heartland states, the BJP has not held the Chief Minister’s post in Bihar on its own while being in power through alliances. If Nitish Kumar shifts to Parliament, it would create a historic opportunity for the party to take direct control of the state leadership within the National Democratic Alliance.
The timing of the move is significant. Nitish Kumar had taken oath for his latest term as Chief Minister only a few months ago after the NDA secured a strong mandate in the Assembly elections. His decision to seek entry into the Rajya Sabha now has led to intense discussions within political circles about succession planning and future power equations in the state.
While there has been no official announcement regarding his resignation, senior leaders of the alliance have reportedly been holding discussions in Patna. The presence of Amit Shah during the nomination filing has further strengthened the perception that the transition is being closely coordinated at the highest level of the NDA leadership.
