In the aftermath of the Lok Sabha election results, the Janata Dal (United), a key ally of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has called for a comprehensive review of the Centre's Agniveer scheme for defense force recruitment. The BJP, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, secured 240 seats, falling 32 seats short of the majority required to form a government independently.
JD(U) spokesperson KC Tyagi voiced the party's concerns, stating, ?A section of voters has been upset over the Agniveer scheme. Our party wants those shortcomings questioned by the public to be discussed in detail and removed,? as reported by ANI. Tyagi emphasized that addressing the public's grievances is crucial for moving forward.
While the JD(U) supports the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), Tyagi clarified that the party believes in finding a solution through dialogue with all stakeholders. He noted, "As the party's national president, the CM had written to the Law Commission chief about the UCC. We are not against it, but a solution should be found by talking to all stakeholders."
Tyagi also reiterated the JD(U)'s support for a caste-based census and demanded special status for Bihar. He stated, "No party in the country has said no to a caste-based census. Bihar has shown the path. PM, too, didn't oppose it in the all-party delegation. The caste-based census is the call of the hour. We will pursue it." He added, "There is no precondition. There is unconditional support. But Bihar's being given the special status is something that we have in our hearts."
The INDIA bloc, in its election promises, condemned the Agniveer scheme and pledged to scrap it if elected. Earlier this month, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi wrote to President Droupadi Murmu, urging intervention in the Agnipath scheme to address what he termed "discrimination" in the benefits provided to the families of deceased soldiers.
