'Not The Government’s Duty To Support Misuse Of Waqf Property': Bihar Governor Arif Mohammad Khan Backs Waqf Amendment

Bihar Governor Arif Mohammad Khan has voiced strong support for the recently introduced Waqf Amendment Act, stressing the importance of transparency and accountability in the management of Waqf properties. In a bold statement, the Governor said it is not the government's responsibility to protect those who misuse properties worth crores under the Waqf system.

Speaking on the issue of religious endowments and their administration, Governor Khan said, “…If you have no loyalty to your purpose and you are not doing any work to fulfil that objective, then it is not the responsibility of the government to stop the misuse of property worth crores and ensure its benefits reach those who have the right to get these benefits.”

He emphasized that the original intent behind Waqf properties was to serve the welfare of the underprivileged and those in need within the community. “When such objectives are derailed by mismanagement or personal gain,” he added, “intervention becomes necessary.”

Referring to the broader social context, Governor Khan called for unity and national pride over communal or sectional interests. “We should never divide ourselves into small units. India has a culture of knowledge. This is a great country. Feel that greatness and fulfil your responsibility towards everyone,” he urged.

The Waqf Amendment Act has stirred debates across the country, with critics accusing the government of interfering in religious matters. However, Governor Khan’s remarks suggest that the legislation is seen by many as a step toward reforming a system that has often been shrouded in opacity and alleged misuse.

Khan, known for his progressive stance on reforms in Muslim personal law and community welfare, has previously supported legislative changes that align with constitutional values and national interest.
