New Delhi was gripped by shock and panic on Friday afternoon after a portion of the historic Humayun’s Tomb in Nizamuddin collapsed, leaving eight to nine people feared trapped under the debris. The incident occurred at around 4:30 pm, according to Delhi Fire Services.
Emergency services were immediately mobilised following an alert about the collapse. Firefighters and police personnel reached the site within minutes and began rescue operations. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) also joined the mission, bringing in specialised equipment to clear debris and search for survivors.
“The situation is critical. Our priority is to rescue those who may still be trapped under the fallen structure,” a Delhi Fire Services official said. The collapse of the dome — part of the UNESCO World Heritage site — has not only raised safety concerns but also drawn attention to the upkeep of historical monuments in the capital.
Eyewitnesses described hearing a loud crash followed by a cloud of dust that engulfed the area, prompting visitors and locals nearby to run for safety.
