Under mounting pressure from the Opposition, Parliament has set aside 25 hours next week for an extensive discussion on Operation Sindoor and the Pahalgam terror attack, two high-stakes issues that have triggered widespread political debate. According to sources from the Business Advisory Committee, 16 hours have been allotted to the Lok Sabha, and 9 hours to the Rajya Sabha, paving the way for a focused debate once Prime Minister Narendra Modi returns from his scheduled foreign visit later this week.
The decision follows days of protest inside the Parliament complex, with Opposition MPs demanding accountability and transparency over recent national security developments. The Opposition has specifically called for the presence of the Home Minister and Defence Minister during the discussions, saying the country deserves clear answers from the top leadership.
The Monsoon Session of Parliament, which began on Monday, has already been marred by disruptions. Both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha witnessed repeated adjournments after Opposition members raised slogans, demanding time-bound discussions on national security, electoral reforms, and the situation in Manipur. On Monday, proceedings in the Lok Sabha were first adjourned till 12:00 p.m. and then again till 2:00 p.m. due to the escalating protests.
Apart from national security, the Opposition is also seeking debate on the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in Bihar, citing concerns of manipulation and voter disenfranchisement.
Despite the uproar, Prime Minister Modi struck a reconciliatory tone earlier in the day, appealing for political unity. “The country has seen the power of unity… every political party has its own agenda, its own role, but we must come together for the nation’s interest,” he said.
He added, “‘Dal hitt mein mat bhale na mile, lekin desh hit mein mann jarur mile’ – Political parties might differ on ideology, but we must unite when it comes to the nation’s welfare.”
