Early Life and Education

Payal Sakariya was born in Thorkhan, a village near Babra in Amreli district, Gujarat. Her father, Kishorbhai Sakariya, is a construction contractor by profession. She completed her education up to the 12th grade from Swa. B.N. Asodariya U.M. Shala in 2015. Before stepping into public life, she had already shown a keen interest in the creative arts.

Political Career

Before entering politics, Payal Sakariya had built a successful career in modelling and acting. She featured in more than 50 Gujarati music videos and gained popularity for her work in regional entertainment. However, during the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020, she shifted her focus toward social service and decided to enter the political arena.(TOI)

In 2021, she contested the Surat Municipal Corporation elections from Ward 16 (Puna West) on an Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) ticket. She won the election by a significant margin of 9,669 votes, becoming one of the youngest corporators in Surat.

The Aam Aadmi Party secured 27 seats in the Surat Municipal Corporation that year, becoming the principal opposition party. Payal quickly emerged as a leading face of the party’s youth leadership and gained recognition not only in her ward but across Surat.

She currently serves as the Leader of the Opposition in the Surat Municipal Corporation. Within the party organization, she holds important positions, serving as Gujarat State Spokesperson and Vice-President of the AAP Gujarat Youth Wing. Though she does not hold any ministerial or state-level position yet, her role in municipal governance and party-building is prominent.

Positive Politics

Major Achievements and Contributions

Payal Sakariya has been a vocal advocate for civic development in her ward, especially in areas that have long been neglected. Her major focus has been on addressing problems such as poor drainage, irregular water supply, unpaved roads, and frequent flooding due to mismanaged creeks.

As the opposition leader in SMC, she has consistently highlighted issues affecting the public. In July 2025, she made headlines by wearing mud-stained clothes during a general board meeting of the municipal corporation, symbolizing the living conditions of residents in flood-affected areas. This act of protest, although dramatic, succeeded in drawing public and media attention to the failures of the administration. She and other corporators were later suspended from the meeting for the disruption, but the protest sparked debate and awareness about local civic failures.(TOI)

She also raised strong objections against excessively high water bills that some residents of Ward 16 received, running into lakhs of rupees. She submitted formal complaints to municipal authorities and demanded a thorough review of the billing process. (Loktej)

Payal continues to push for improvements in areas under the Town Planning Scheme in Punagam, which includes the development of parks, playgrounds, community halls, and road networks. Her work is closely tied to grassroots issues, and she regularly interacts with residents to understand their concerns. (Indian Express)

Promises and Future Commitments

Payal Sakariya has pledged to ensure transparency in the municipal administration and address the long-pending issues in her ward. Some of her key promises include:

  1. Correcting the unfair and inflated water billing system.

  2. Pressing for the timely completion of infrastructure projects including road development, stormwater drainage, parks, and community centres.

  3. Ensuring that public grievances are not just heard but acted upon through follow-up and accountability.

  4. Promoting a culture of active citizen participation in governance.

Her approach to politics reflects a commitment to accountability and visibility, with frequent on-ground visits and responsiveness to local issues.

Personal Life

Before entering politics, Payal Sakariya was a well-known figure in the Gujarati entertainment industry. She belongs to the Patidar community and has expressed her intent to either resume higher education or continue creative pursuits alongside her political responsibilities.

She has declared no criminal cases against her and minimal assets worth ₹1.43 lakh, as per her 2021 election affidavit. Her clean image and humble beginnings have helped her build trust among voters.

Controversies

During a general body meeting of SMC on June 26, 2024, BJP councillors Ashok Dhami and Kanu Gediya accused Payal Sakariya of extorting ₹11 lakh (later raised to ₹27 lakh) from residents in Town Planning Scheme‑11. Gediya reportedly used derogatory language and claimed demand from 27 households. Sakariya filed a criminal defamation complaint, resulting in a Surat court ordering summons against both councillors under IPC Sections 499 and 500. She also filed a civil suit seeking compensation for reputational damage.(TOI)

On March 26, 2025, Payal Sakariya and eight other AAP members were booked by Lalgate police for allegedly rioting at SMC headquarters. The case was filed after an altercation with security staff and police while they attempted to protest during a civic meeting. Charges included unlawful assembly, obstructing public servants, causing hurt, and rioting. (TOI)
