Early Life and Education
Payal Sakariya was born in Thorkhan, a village near Babra in Amreli district, Gujarat. Her father, Kishorbhai Sakariya, is a construction contractor by profession. She completed her education up to the 12th grade from Swa. B.N. Asodariya U.M. Shala in 2015. Before stepping into public life, she had already shown a keen interest in the creative arts.
Political Career
Before entering politics, Payal Sakariya had built a successful career in modelling and acting. She featured in more than 50 Gujarati music videos and gained popularity for her work in regional entertainment. However, during the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020, she shifted her focus toward social service and decided to enter the political arena.(TOI)
In 2021, she contested the Surat Municipal Corporation elections from Ward 16 (Puna West) on an Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) ticket. She won the election by a significant margin of 9,669 votes, becoming one of the youngest corporators in Surat.
The Aam Aadmi Party secured 27 seats in the Surat Municipal Corporation that year, becoming the principal opposition party. Payal quickly emerged as a leading face of the party’s youth leadership and gained recognition not only in her ward but across Surat.
She currently serves as the Leader of the Opposition in the Surat Municipal Corporation. During a general body meeting of SMC on June 26, 2024, BJP councillors Ashok Dhami and Kanu Gediya accused Payal Sakariya of extorting ₹11 lakh (later raised to ₹27 lakh) from residents in Town Planning Scheme‑11. Gediya reportedly used derogatory language and claimed demand from 27 households. Sakariya filed a criminal defamation complaint, resulting in a Surat court ordering summons against both councillors under IPC Sections 499 and 500.
