Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday began his two-day visit to Malaysia by warmly engaging with the Indian community and highlighting the deep cultural and emotional ties between the two countries. Addressing a large gathering of Indians living in Malaysia, the Prime Minister described the diaspora as a powerful link that brings India and Malaysia closer.
Speaking at the event, PM Modi said that the Indian-origin community in Malaysia plays a special role in strengthening relations between the two nations. He pointed out that shared traditions, food habits and languages have created a natural connection between the people of India and Malaysia.
“There is a special warmth between India and Malaysia. From food to language, from culture to daily life, we feel a sense of familiarity. You all represent a living connection between the two countries,” the Prime Minister said while interacting with the diaspora.
He also spoke about how Indian and Malaysian cuisines reflect shared roots, noting that dishes, spices and flavours feel similar whether one is in India or Malaysia. According to him, these cultural overlaps make the bond between the two societies deeper and more meaningful.
PM Modi also referred to the popularity of Indian music and films in Malaysia. He mentioned that cultural exchange through cinema and music has helped bring people closer across borders. He praised Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim for his appreciation of Indian culture, especially Indian songs, which has further strengthened people-to-people ties.
Earlier in the day, PM Modi arrived in Kuala Lumpur where he was personally received by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim at the airport. The two leaders shared a warm greeting, reflecting the friendly relationship between India and Malaysia. Members of the Indian community gathered in large numbers to welcome the Prime Minister, with children waving Indian and Malaysian flags as the leaders walked together.
After the reception, both leaders travelled together to the hotel, underlining the close diplomatic ties between the two countries. PM Modi’s visit is expected to focus on strengthening cooperation in trade, culture, and people-to-people relations, with special emphasis on the role of the Indian diaspora in Malaysia.
