PM Modi, President Trump Hold High-Level Call; Push To Boost Strategic, Security & Trade Ties

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and United States President Donald Trump held a detailed phone conversation on Thursday, signalling a fresh push to accelerate the India–US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership. Officials said both leaders expressed strong satisfaction over the growing strength of bilateral ties and agreed that cooperation across defence, technology, energy and security must continue to expand at an active pace. The conversation also focused on keeping momentum in trade discussions, with both sides stressing that deeper commercial engagement is central to the future of the partnership.

After the call, PM Modi posted on X that the interaction was “warm and engaging” and that India and the United States would continue working together for global peace, stability and prosperity. According to sources, Modi and Trump also exchanged views on emerging global and regional challenges, including issues related to strategic security, supply chains and technological resilience. They reaffirmed that regular high-level communication remains essential for safeguarding shared interests.

The timing of the conversation is significant, coming just days after Russian President Vladimir Putin concluded a high-profile visit to New Delhi. His appearance alongside PM Modi, including a widely discussed image of the two leaders travelling together in a car, generated debate even inside the United States Congress. During a hearing on India–US relations, US Representative Sydney Kamlager-Dove displayed the photo and remarked that the image “says more than a thousand words,” criticising what she described as a weak diplomatic approach by the Trump administration in earlier years.

Meanwhile, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said negotiations on an India–US trade deal are progressing constructively after five rounds of substantial discussion. He added that the latest visit of the new US Deputy Trade Representative was meant to strengthen coordination rather than restart negotiations. Goyal stressed that trade agreements should not be forced under deadlines because rushing could lead to errors, and both countries must secure a balanced and mutually beneficial outcome. Officials familiar with the matter said the trade dialogue remains one of the most important pillars in the broader strategic partnership.
