In a move aimed at modernizing the work environment of lawmakers, Members of the Rajya Sabha will now be able to purchase and claim reimbursement for high-tech gadgets such as smart TVs, projectors, wearable devices, and more. This significant update comes under the revised Scheme of Financial Entitlement of Members of Rajya Sabha for Computer Equipment, designed to enhance the digital capabilities of MPs and improve their legislative performance.

The new framework falls under The Provision of Computer Equipment (Members of Rajya Sabha and Officers) Rules, 2008. It was approved following a meeting on May 23 to revise and expand the existing list of eligible devices under the scheme.

Key Highlights of the Revised Scheme:

  • Eligibility-Based Reimbursement:
    • ₹2,00,000 for MPs with more than 3 years remaining in their term.
    • ₹1,50,000 for MPs elected in a by-election with 3 years or less remaining.
    • An additional ₹1,00,000 is allowed after 3 years in office, provided at least 6 months remain in the term.
  • Claim Requirements:
Reimbursement is strictly on submission of original purchase invoices, ensuring transparency and responsible use of public funds.

What MPs Already Get:

Rajya Sabha members have long been entitled to:

  • Desktop computers
  • Laptops
  • Smartphones
  • Printers and scanners
  • Pen drives
  • UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply)

These have helped them perform daily office and parliamentary duties efficiently.

What’s New on the Approved Gadget List:

With technology evolving rapidly, the scheme now includes:

  • Smart TVs and Smart Displays
  • Smart Projectors and Portable Projector Screens
  • Tablet Computers with Keyboards
  • Smart Speakers and Wearables (like smartwatches)
  • Accessory items such as:
    • Headphones and Bluetooth headsets/AirPods
    • Microphones and webcams
    • Anti-virus software
    • Speakers

Purpose and Impact:

The revamp aims to equip MPs with modern tools for enhanced participation in legislative, committee, and constituency work. Devices like tablets and smart projectors can streamline presentations and digital collaboration. Wearables and smart assistants will also support mobility and efficiency, matching the fast-paced nature of a parliamentarian’s role.

This initiative is being hailed as a part of India’s broader digital governance transformation, ensuring its lawmakers are not left behind in an increasingly tech-driven world.
