A new political flashpoint has emerged in Mumbai after Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut launched a sharp social media attack on mayoral aspirant Ritu Tawde, following remarks attributed to her about removing Bangladeshis from the city. Raut’s intervention has pushed the issue beyond local politics, drawing the Union government’s Bangladesh policy into a heated civic-election discourse.
Reacting to Tawde’s reported comments, Raut questioned what he called the glaring inconsistency between aggressive political rhetoric on illegal immigration and the Centre’s financial engagement with Bangladesh. In a pointed post, he suggested that slogans about expelling Bangladeshis sit uneasily alongside India’s continued economic assistance to Dhaka under the Union Budget, a contrast that quickly went viral and triggered intense exchanges online.
The controversy soon widened as political voices began citing budgetary data to fuel the argument. Recent Union Budget figures show that India has trimmed its development assistance to Bangladesh compared to earlier years. While some leaders highlighted the reduction to claim a tougher stance, others used the same numbers to question whether the Centre’s messaging on immigration aligns with its broader regional strategy.
Amid the political sparring, the Union government’s long-standing position on foreign aid has again come into focus. The Centre has repeatedly maintained that development assistance to neighbouring countries forms part of India’s diplomatic outreach, designed to promote infrastructure growth, economic cooperation and regional stability, rather than serve short-term political objectives.
Policy experts argue that overseas aid decisions are typically driven by long-term strategic considerations and bilateral commitments, not domestic electoral calculations. However, they also acknowledge that such allocations frequently become ammunition in internal political battles, particularly during high-stakes civic contests or periods of heightened debate around national security and migration.
