Samajwadi Party (SP) MLA and Maharashtra SP President Abu Azmi has been suspended from the Maharashtra Assembly for the remainder of the ongoing Budget Session following his controversial remarks praising Mughal ruler Aurangzeb. The suspension, announced on Wednesday, comes after mounting political backlash and demands for strict action against him.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde had assured on Tuesday that Azmi would face consequences for his statements. "His statement will cost him... He will be suspended. We have put forth our demand to suspend him from the House," Shinde declared while addressing the media. He further stated that "the people of Maharashtra will not forgive him" for his remarks.

Azmi, who issued a public apology before his suspension, claimed that his words had been misinterpreted. In a video statement, he explained that he was merely citing historical accounts and had no intention of disrespecting revered figures. "My words have been twisted. I only stated what historians and writers have claimed about Aurangzeb Rahmatullah Ali," Azmi said. He also emphasized that he had not made any derogatory remarks against Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Sambhaji Maharaj, or any other respected figures in Maharashtra.

Despite his apology, the controversy continued to escalate, leading to his suspension. Azmi also criticized the political nature of the debate, arguing that it was being used to divert attention from governance issues. "The issue is being made political, and shutting down the budget session over this is harmful to the people of Maharashtra," he stated.
