Elon Musk’s satellite internet service, Starlink, is expected to launch in India by late 2025 or early 2026, but its widespread use may remain limited due to high pricing and restricted capacity.
Minister of State for Rural Development and Communications Dr. Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani, while speaking in Parliament, confirmed that the monthly subscription fee for Starlink will be approximately ₹3,000, with an additional high upfront cost for terminal hardware. The minister stated that these costs could make the service unaffordable for many users, especially in rural or economically weaker areas.
Dr. Pemmasani also informed the House that Starlink will support only around 20 lakh (2 million) connections across India due to technical and satellite bandwidth constraints. He clarified that Starlink is not expected to pose a threat to existing telecom providers, as satellite communication services cannot provide meaningful nationwide coverage comparable to fiber and mobile networks.
Starlink, operated by SpaceX, delivers internet through a network of low-Earth orbit satellites, making it suitable for remote or underserved areas. However, due to its pricing and limited connection capacity, Starlink is unlikely to compete with major Indian providers like Jio, Airtel, and BSNL, which offer broader and more affordable connectivity through existing infrastructure.
