Telangana CM Revanth Reddy Leads Delhi Protest Demanding Presidential Assent For 42% OBC Quota Bill

Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, along with his full cabinet, MLAs, and Corporation Chairpersons, staged a major protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar today demanding immediate Presidential assent for the Telangana OBC Reservation Bill. The bill, which proposes 42% reservation for Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in local body elections, government jobs, and educational institutions, has already been passed by the Telangana Assembly and cleared by the state cabinet but remains pending with the President of India.

The protest marks an aggressive political push by the Congress-led Telangana government to bring national focus to what it calls a legitimate and urgent demand for backward class representation. The demonstration was joined by Congress MPs, including Chamala Kiran Kumar Reddy, who reiterated that the OBC quota proposal is backed by a scientific caste census conducted earlier this year in Telangana. He stated that the findings of the survey clearly reflect the population strength and socio-economic backwardness of OBC communities, justifying the 42% quota.

The Congress has claimed that the delay in getting approval from the President is unjustified and politically motivated. According to party leaders, the Central government is ignoring the constitutional process and deliberately stalling the will of the Telangana Assembly. The party has also requested an appointment with President Droupadi Murmu to present a memorandum and explain the legal and democratic basis of the bill.

Earlier this week, Congress MP Mallu Ravi moved an adjournment motion in Lok Sabha, calling for a detailed discussion on the delay in the bill's approval. He pointed out that the bill is not only legal but also essential for social justice. The party believes the denial of timely approval undermines the rights of backward classes and weakens democratic federalism.

Meanwhile, in Hyderabad, Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) MLC K. Kavitha has launched a 72-hour hunger strike at Dharna Chowk, also demanding swift clearance of the bill. While accusing both the Congress and BJP of failing to deliver on OBC justice, Kavitha emphasized the urgency of passing the ordinance currently pending with the Telangana Governor. Her parallel protest indicates a rare alignment between rival parties on the need to implement the 42% reservation.
