TMC MLA Manirul Islam Sparks Row After Threatening EC Officials Over SIR, Says “Will Hunt Down From Underground”; BJP Slams Mamata Govt

A fresh political storm has erupted in West Bengal after Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA from Farakka, Manirul Islam, landed in deep controversy over remarks that were widely interpreted as an open threat to Election Commission officials. The comments, made during a public gathering amid tensions over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, have sparked outrage, sharp reactions from the BJP, and renewed debate over the safety and independence of constitutional authorities.

According to multiple accounts, Islam used unusually aggressive language while addressing party supporters, allegedly warning that officials involved in the SIR process would be “hunted down” and “taught a lesson.” A video clip of the speech quickly circulated on social media, intensifying the backlash and drawing national attention to the episode.

The BJP wasted no time in seizing on the remarks. Party spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari accused the ruling TMC of encouraging intimidation tactics and undermining democratic institutions. In a strongly worded post on X, Bhandari described the speech as an “open call to incite a mob against the Election Commission,” alleging that threats against officials had now become a pattern rather than an exception in West Bengal politics.

The controversy has been further fuelled by Islam’s recent past. Just days earlier, the Farakka Block Development Office (BDO) was vandalised following a protest, with opposition leaders alleging that the MLA led or instigated the crowd. Several government officials reportedly sustained injuries during the incident, prompting BJP MLA Gouri Shankar to directly blame Islam for orchestrating the attack. While the TMC has not officially endorsed these claims, the sequence of events has added to the seriousness of the allegations.

At the heart of the confrontation lies the SIR exercise, which has become a major flashpoint between the BJP-led Centre and the Mamata Banerjee government. The ruling party in Bengal has repeatedly alleged that the revision process is being misused to target genuine voters, while the Centre and the Election Commission maintain that the exercise is aimed at ensuring transparency and accuracy in electoral rolls.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who has herself led protests against earlier phases of the SIR, recently adopted a more cautious tone. Addressing district magistrates at a high-level meeting in Nabanna, she stressed strict compliance with Supreme Court guidelines and warned against harassment of citizens in the name of “logical discrepancies.” The meeting gained attention after Banerjee unexpectedly joined proceedings chaired by Chief Secretary Nandini Chakraborty.

The Supreme Court, meanwhile, has stepped in to add safeguards, directing the Election Commission to publicly display the names of individuals summoned over discrepancies at gram panchayat and block offices. The order came while hearing petitions filed by TMC leaders challenging the SIR process.
