TMC Refuses To Nominate Member To JPC, Mamata Banerjee Calls 130th Constitutional Amendment ‘Death Knell For Democracy’

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Saturday announced that it will not nominate any member to the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) formed to scrutinize the bills allowing the sacking of a Prime Minister, Chief Ministers, or ministers if detained or arrested for 30 consecutive days.

In a statement, TMC said, "We oppose the 130th Constitution Amendment Bill at the stage of introduction, and in our view the JPC is a farce. Therefore, we are not nominating anyone from AITC."

The development follows the tabling of three controversial bills in the Lok Sabha by Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday: the Constitution (One Hundred and Thirtieth Amendment) Bill, 2025, the Government of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill, 2025, and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2025.

The introduction of the bills triggered a massive uproar in Parliament. Opposition members alleged that the government aims to destabilize non-BJP ruled state governments through these bills. During the proceedings, some members even tore copies of the bills and threw them towards Amit Shah, who subsequently announced that the bills would be referred to a JPC for further scrutiny.

Mamata Banerjee condemned the bills, warning that they would undermine democracy and judicial independence. On X (formerly Twitter), she posted: "I condemn the 130th Constitutional Amendment Bill, proposed to be tabled by the Government of India today. I condemn it as a step towards something that is more than a super-Emergency, a step to end the democratic era of India forever. This draconian step comes as a death knell for democracy and federalism in India."

She further said that the bills would consolidate power in the hands of the Prime Minister and Union Home Minister, calling the move “more than a super-Emergency.”
