Tragedy In Rajasthan: Four Children Dead, Several Injured After School Roof Collapses Amid Torrential Rain In Jhalawar

In a heartbreaking incident in Rajasthan's Jhalawar district, four young children lost their lives and several others sustained serious injuries after the roof of a government-run primary school collapsed on Friday morning during a spell of intense rainfall.

The incident occurred at Peeplodi Primary School, a decades-old structure located in a rural block of the district. Eyewitnesses said the children were attending morning classes when, without warning, a large section of the roof gave way, sending concrete slabs and debris crashing down onto the students.

Rescue teams rushed to the scene within minutes of the alert. District authorities, local police, and emergency services coordinated a swift response. Seventeen children were pulled out of the rubble, some critically injured. A JCB machine was brought in to aid in removing heavy debris, while villagers joined the rescue efforts with bare hands, desperate to help.

The injured children were immediately taken to the nearest community health center, while ten critically injured students were referred to the district hospital in Jhalawar for advanced care. According to district officials, three to four of the referred children remain in a serious condition, and medical teams are on high alert.

“This is an unimaginable loss,” said Jhalawar’s Superintendent of Police, Amit Kumar, while confirming the deaths. “Our focus now is on providing medical care to the injured and determining whether anyone else remains trapped under the debris.”

As anxious parents and community members gathered outside the school and hospitals, local administration began assessing the structural integrity of other nearby public buildings. Preliminary reports suggest that the school building was already in a dilapidated state and had not undergone maintenance in several years, raising questions about government oversight and accountability.

The tragedy comes just days after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a heavy rainfall warning for several parts of Rajasthan, including Jhalawar. The state has been battered by intense showers since the beginning of July, and authorities are now being criticized for not preemptively closing unsafe schools in rain-affected areas.

Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma expressed deep sorrow over the loss of young lives and announced compensation for the families of the deceased and the injured. He has also ordered an immediate safety audit of all government school buildings in vulnerable districts.
