Indian Railways has announced a modest revision in passenger fares that will come into effect from December 26, 2025. The fare adjustment will apply to ordinary class, non-AC, and AC categories on select long-distance journeys, while short-distance and suburban commuters will not be affected.
According to the official announcement, passengers travelling in ordinary class for short distances will continue to pay the same fare. There will be no increase for ordinary class journeys up to 215 kilometres, offering relief to daily and short-route travelers. Suburban train services and monthly season tickets will also remain untouched by the revision.
However, for passengers travelling longer distances, a marginal increase has been introduced. Ordinary class journeys beyond 215 kilometres will see a rise of 1 paise per kilometre. For mail and express trains, both non-AC and AC classes will witness a fare increase of 2 paise per kilometre.
Railway officials clarified that the hike has been kept minimal to balance passenger affordability while addressing rising operational costs. For example, a passenger travelling 500 kilometres in a non-AC mail or express train will pay only Rs 10 extra, making the impact relatively light on individual travelers.
The railways expect this revision to generate an additional Rs 600 crore in revenue, which is likely to be used for improving services, maintenance, and passenger amenities across the network.
