Ending nearly two decades of political separation, Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) president Raj Thackeray on Wednesday formally announced a joint alliance for the upcoming Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections scheduled for January 15. The reunion marks one of the most significant political realignments in Mumbai politics in recent years.

Standing together on the same stage with their families, the Thackeray cousins signalled a renewed commitment to unity, Marathi identity, and Mumbai’s future. While the leaders confirmed that a detailed seat-sharing arrangement would be unveiled soon, they made it clear that the alliance is not a short-term adjustment but a strategic partnership.

Addressing the press, Uddhav Thackeray said the two had reunited “as Thackeray brothers” and stressed that strengthening the Marathi Manus remains their core objective. He warned that continued political infighting would weaken Maharashtra and amount to disrespecting the sacrifices of martyrs. Referring to divisive political slogans, Uddhav urged Marathi voters to stay united, cautioning that disunity would only benefit forces seeking to fracture Mumbai.

Uddhav also invoked the legacy of his grandfather Prabodhankar Thackeray and Shiv Sena founder Balasaheb Thackeray, reminding supporters that the Sena was born out of the struggle for Maharashtra and has carried that mission for six decades. He asserted that Mumbai belongs to the Marathi people and can never be taken away through political manipulation.

Raj Thackeray, meanwhile, used the occasion to underline that Maharashtra’s interests are bigger than personal or party disputes. Without naming the BJP, he took indirect jabs at the ruling establishment, saying internal conflicts are deliberately fuelled to weaken the state. He claimed that organised gangs operating under political protection are creating instability and warned against forces dividing society for power.

Calling the moment long overdue, Raj Thackeray officially declared the Shiv Sena (UBT)–MNS alliance, stating that Maharashtra had been waiting for this unity. Senior Sena leader Sanjay Raut described the development as an “auspicious beginning” and said the Thackeray reunion is key to keeping the saffron flag flying over the BMC and other civic bodies.
