Hours before Washington’s steep 50% tariffs on Indian goods come into effect, Prime Minister Narendra Modi sent out a defiant message, assuring citizens that India would not bend under external pressure. Speaking at a massive public gathering in Ahmedabad on Monday, the Prime Minister declared, “No matter how much pressure comes, we will find a way out. My government will never let small entrepreneurs, cattle rearers, or farmers suffer any harm.”
The sharp remarks came against the backdrop of US President Donald Trump’s decision to double import duties on Indian merchandise as part of his “America First” trade revival agenda. The move, effective August 26, has triggered widespread alarm among exporters and business communities in India, who warn of heavy losses across sectors.
Addressing small business owners, agricultural producers, and livestock keepers directly, Modi invoked Gujarat’s legacy of resilience. “From Gandhi’s homeland, I pledge again: your welfare comes before everything else. My administration will ensure that no harm comes to small traders, livestock farmers, or agricultural workers,” he said.
The Prime Minister was in Ahmedabad to inaugurate and lay the foundation stones for development projects worth more than ₹5,400 crore. Using the platform to underscore India’s stance, Modi criticized the rise of global protectionism, saying, “Today the world is witnessing policies rooted in economic selfishness. India will always stand firm against such measures and place its citizens’ interests above all.”
Meanwhile, senior government officials are set to meet today to finalize a package of support mechanisms for Indian exporters bracing for the immediate fallout of the tariff escalation. With Indian goods facing 50% levies starting Tuesday, New Delhi is preparing to soften the blow on industries already under stress from global headwinds.
