Political circles in West Bengal are abuzz with speculation that Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari may contest from the high-profile Bhabanipur Assembly constituency in the upcoming state elections. The buzz intensified after Adhikari participated in Dol Yatra celebrations and led a procession in Bhabanipur, the seat currently represented by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Speaking to reporters during the festivities, Adhikari made a strong ideological statement, saying, “This is Hindustan but some people are misinterpreting the meaning of secularism. Hindustan belongs to Hindus.” He also called for greater Hindu unity and warned against what he termed “atheism” and “pseudo-secularism.”

The remarks have triggered fresh political debate, with many interpreting his presence and messaging in Bhabanipur as a clear signal of electoral intent. Although the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has not officially declared its candidate for the constituency, party insiders say preparations are already underway.

Sources indicate that the BJP has established a dedicated “war room” in Bhabanipur to strategise for the high-stakes battle. Adhikari is reportedly monitoring developments personally, further strengthening speculation that he could directly challenge Mamata Banerjee on her home turf.

The constituency has also seen significant voter list revisions following the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise. According to the final voter roll, around 47,000 names have been deleted, while 14,154 names remain under adjudication. The changes have added another layer of political tension ahead of the polls.

Adhikari himself has added fuel to the fire with bold statements at recent meetings. “I defeated her in Nandigram; this time I will defeat her in Bhabanipur as well. I will make her a former Chief Minister,” he declared, referencing his victory over Banerjee in the 2021 Nandigram contest.

Political analysts believe that if Adhikari decides to contest from Bhabanipur, it would turn the seat into one of the most closely watched electoral battles in the state. A direct face-off between the BJP’s aggressive campaigner and the incumbent Chief Minister could reshape the narrative of the West Bengal Assembly elections.

As speculation grows, all eyes are now on the BJP’s official announcement. Whether this political challenge becomes reality or remains strategic pressure, Bhabanipur is clearly emerging as the epicentre of the state’s electoral drama.
