A political storm is brewing in Gujarat, as a dramatic challenge issued by BJP's Morbi MLA Kantibhai Amrutiya to AAP leader and newly elected Visavadar MLA Gopal Italia has ignited speculation over the resignation of not one, but possibly two sitting legislators.
The flashpoint? A bold dare laid down by Kantibhai Amrutiya, who challenged Italia to contest against him from the Morbi constituency. The challenge wasn’t just rhetorical — Amrutiya added a high-stakes twist by promising a ₹2 crore reward if Italia manages to defeat him.
A Political Flashback
Kantibhai Amrutiya, a seven-time legislator, rose to national attention in 2022 when he jumped into the Machchhu River to rescue victims of the devastating Morbi bridge collapse. His act of bravery earned him public admiration and helped secure him a BJP ticket in the 2022 Assembly elections — replacing Brajesh Merja, a turncoat from Congress. Amrutiya won and reclaimed Morbi for the BJP.
Fast forward to 2025: following AAP’s surprise victory in the Visavadar bypoll, where Gopal Italia defeated BJP’s Kirit Patel by over 10,000 votes, AAP has grown more vocal in Gujarat, particularly targeting Morbi over infrastructure and local governance issues.
Frustrated by what he calls “intimidation in Morbi using Gopal Italia’s name,” Kantibhai publicly dared Italia to fight him directly. Italia’s response: “Challenge accepted.”
The Stakes Are Real — But So Is the Confusion
Gopal Italia has responded with equal aggression, saying Kantibhai should resign immediately without consulting BJP leadership or hiding behind party high command. “Don’t wait for CR Patil’s permission. Resign and let’s go to the people,” Italia declared, pushing the ball back into the BJP veteran’s court.
Now, Kantibhai has escalated further: “If you’re ready, then you should resign too. Let both of us go to the people and see who they choose.”
Will They Really Resign?
This political standoff has sparked intense debate in Gujarat’s political circles. While both leaders are flexing their electoral muscles, the question remains: will either — or both — actually step down to make way for a head-on contest?
Resigning from a freshly secured MLA post is a risky move, and many believe this is more political theatre than a real electoral plan. However, with both parties trying to prove dominance in a state where AAP has recently made inroads, neither can afford to be seen as backing down.
What’s at Stake?
For Kantibhai Amrutiya, this is about defending not just a constituency, but a heroic legacy built during a tragedy. For Gopal Italia, it’s about leveraging momentum and expanding AAP’s footprint in Gujarat by challenging BJP in its stronghold.
