As border tensions between India and Pakistan show no sign of easing, authorities across Indian states have ramped up civil defence preparedness, launching public awareness drives and emergency drills to equip citizens for any eventuality—including prolonged blackouts or even conflict.
In cities like Amritsar, Srinagar, and border villages across Jammu and Kashmir, sirens blared early Thursday morning as part of coordinated evacuation and bunker drills. Emergency volunteers guided locals through simulation exercises involving sudden shelling scenarios and temporary power cuts.
As the possibility of escalation remains uncertain, citizens are increasingly turning their attention to one pressing concern: how to ready their homes in case of a crisis.
What Should Your Emergency Kit Look Like?
Experts suggest that a well-stocked emergency kit can make a crucial difference. At the core of such a kit are food, water, medical supplies, lighting, hygiene items, and important documents.
“In case of a blackout, we must all abide by the guidelines that the government has issued and avoid using mobile phones. But if the phone’s flashlight needs to be used in necessary situations, like going to the washroom, then a power bank can be helpful to keep the phones charged,” says Gian Chand, a senior design engineer with a private security firm.
Food and Water Essentials:
- Stock non-perishable items like canned food, dried fruits, nuts, oats, and channa.
- Traditional Indian food storage techniques such as pickling and drying are also being encouraged.
- Keep a sufficient supply of clean drinking water; alternatively, stock water purification tablets or a portable water filter.
Medical and Hygiene Supplies:
- First-aid kits must include antiseptics, bandages, painkillers, and prescription medications.
- Sanitation products such as soap, shampoo, toothbrushes, and sanitary pads should be packed in sufficient quantities.
Lighting and Communication:
- Keep battery-powered flashlights, candles, and extra batteries handy.
- A portable radio is essential to receive government broadcasts in case of digital outages.
Financial and Identity Backup:
- With the risk of digital payment failure during power cuts, having physical cash on hand is advised.
- All important documents—including Aadhaar cards, land titles, insurance papers, and identification—should be stored in waterproof folders.
Basic Tools:
- A small toolkit with pliers, a wrench, duct tape, and a hammer can be useful for emergency repairs.
Government on Alert, Citizens Asked to Stay Calm
State disaster management authorities have released detailed advisories on social media, helpline numbers, and safe house locations. While no formal curfew or shutdown has been imposed, people in border districts have been asked to avoid unnecessary travel and remain updated via official communication channels.
With India’s recent Operation Sindoor precision strikes targeting terror hubs in Pakistan and PoJK, concerns about retaliation remain high. Yet officials stress that preparedness is not panic.
