In a development that has set Bihar’s political circles abuzz, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav on Wednesday made a surprise appearance at a traditional Dahi-Chura feast hosted by his elder son, Tej Pratap Yadav, on the occasion of Makar Sankranti in Patna. The rare public sighting of father and son together has reignited speculation about a possible softening of strained family ties.
The event, held at Tej Pratap’s new residence, saw him seated alongside Lalu Prasad Yadav, a moment that quickly became the centre of political discussion. Adding to the significance of the gathering, Bihar Governor Arif Mohammed Khan was also present, lending the celebration a broader public and political dimension.
Several members of the extended Yadav family attended the feast, including Tej Pratap’s maternal uncles Prabhunath Yadav and Sadhu Yadav. However, sources said that by the time Sadhu Yadav arrived, Lalu Prasad Yadav had already departed.
This visit is being seen as particularly noteworthy because it marks the first time Lalu Prasad Yadav has gone to Tej Pratap’s residence since their relationship hit rock bottom following a major personal controversy last year. After a photograph of Tej Pratap with a woman went viral on social media, he moved out of the family home. Lalu Prasad Yadav responded sharply at the time, expelling his elder son from the RJD for six years and publicly cutting off ties, citing “irresponsible behaviour.”
Following his expulsion, Tej Pratap struck an emotional note, repeatedly stating that his parents, Lalu Prasad Yadav and Rabri Devi, meant everything to him. He also claimed that “greedy people” were manipulating events and playing politics with his personal life. Later, he floated his own political outfit and contested the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections, but failed to secure a victory.
