A major fire broke out at a busy commercial complex in Ahmedabad on Monday, sending panic through the area and triggering a massive rescue operation after flames rapidly spread through the building, trapping several people inside a gym. Authorities confirmed that all those trapped were rescued safely, and no casualties were reported.
The fire erupted at Shangrila-2 Arcade in the Shyamal Char Rasta area and is suspected to have started near a Kotak Mahindra Bank ATM on the ground floor. What initially appeared to be a small fire quickly escalated as flames spread from the parking section to the upper floors, filling the building with thick smoke.
The most alarming situation unfolded at HR Fitness Gym, where around 25 to 30 people were present when the smoke entered the premises, leaving them stranded inside as the fire intensified.
As panic gripped the complex, teams from Ahmedabad Fire and Emergency Services rushed to the spot with more than 20 fire tenders and nearly 50 firefighters, launching a rapid rescue mission to evacuate those trapped in the smoke-filled building.
Firefighters battled the blaze for several hours and managed to bring the situation under control through continuous water spraying and coordinated evacuation efforts. All gym occupants were safely brought out, preventing what could have turned into a major tragedy.
While no injuries or deaths were reported, the fire caused significant property damage. Several vehicles parked in the basement were completely destroyed after the flames spread through the lower parking area.
To support emergency operations, authorities temporarily shut the road from Shyamal Char Rasta to Prahladnagar, causing traffic disruptions in the area as rescue teams worked to contain the blaze.
Police and forensic teams have now launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the fire, though early indications suggest it may have originated near the ATM on the ground floor.
