In a significant political development, the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) has formally staked its claim for the Leader of Opposition (LoP) post in the Maharashtra Assembly, rejecting the idea of sharing the position with the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar faction). The party has nominated its group leader, Bhaskar Jadhav, for the crucial role.

On Tuesday, a Sena (UBT) delegation led by Uddhav Thackeray met Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar and submitted a letter asserting their claim. The move is seen as a calculated step, as the party was initially hesitant to file a formal request without a clear signal from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the largest party in the ruling coalition. Sources suggest that the decision came only after the Sena received feelers from the BJP, hinting at a potential shift in political alignments.

MVA Dynamics and Congress' Stand

Before approaching Narwekar, Thackeray held discussions with Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) allies, including NCP state chief Jayant Patil and party leader Jitendra Awhad. Notably, no Congress leaders were present at the meeting. However, Congress state president Nana Patole had earlier clarified that his party has no objections to the Shiv Sena (UBT) staking claim to the LoP position. In return, the Congress is eyeing the Leader of Opposition post in the state council, currently held by Shiv Sena’s Ambadas Danve. The Sena has yet to respond to this demand.

Speaker’s Discretion and BJP’s Role

The legislature secretariat has clarified that there are no specific rules governing the appointment of the LoP, leaving the decision to the Speaker’s discretion. This places the ball in Rahul Narwekar’s court, making BJP’s stance on the matter even more crucial. Given the uneasy ties between BJP and the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, political analysts suggest that if the LoP post is granted to the Thackeray-led faction, it could signal a thaw in BJP-Sena (UBT) relations.
